Project Cornerstone

Project Cornerstone

The Project Cornerstone logo, a YMCA of Silicon Valley initiative, on a blue background. The ABC Project Cornerstone Program started at Almond over 10 years ago and is a wonderful addition to our curriculum!

Cornerstone’s objective is to build a web of communal support and help students develop a positive growth mindset.  Standing up for yourself (and others) as well as learning how to navigate difficult playground situations are addressed through books and activities.

Almond volunteers lead and participate in the program on campus. Volunteers read books in the classroom to the students along with a correlating, fun activity. Grades 1-6 are read the same book, whereas kindergarteners have a separate curriculum.

Cornerstone not only teaches our kids to "fill their buckets", but it makes the volunteers feel good too! It is a really fulfilling way to support our school and a great way to get to know your class and become a central part of the Almond community.

Volunteer commitment is around two hours per book, and we have seven books to read this year, which works out at roughly one per month starting in October. We find reading in pairs works well.

Training is really flexible and includes:  Initial Project Cornerstone training (online), individual book training and preparation for the class visit. Then you will be prepared for the lesson itself which will take no more than 40 minutes.

During these ever-changing times we are also planning to provide the lesson as a short movie, which can be shown in class in the event it is not able to happen in person.

PLUS … Don’t miss our Cornerstone Crew get-togethers! Totally optional, always fun!
