Dear Almond families,

These past two days back on the Almond campus have been filled with engaging activities, community-building, fun, and plenty of laughter. I’ve had the joy of seeing students jump right into learning and connection. I watched a class of first graders think flexibly about numbers during Number Corner, while our sixth graders set year-long goals and raised apple-juice-filled flutes in a celebratory “toast” to their success this year.

Yesterday, I also had the opportunity to welcome students in grades 1–6 to our First-Day-of-School assemblies in the Multi. Together, we talked about what it means to S.O.A.R. at school (ask your child about it at home!) and how each of us contributes to a strong school community. We also reviewed playground expectations so that we can all share a consistent message of safety, acceptance, and respect.

At the end of each assembly, I sent students off with a question to consider: How can we show kindness to others?

Our entire staff and student body will be thinking about this question over the next couple of weeks and carrying it with us throughout the school year. It might just make a wonderful conversation starter at home tonight!

Upcoming Community events

I am looking forward to seeing everyone tonight at the Popsicle Social and Activities Event from 6:00-7:30 on the Almond blacktop. The PTA will be providing popsicles! And don’t forget this Saturday August 15, Almond will be hosting the LASD district Welcome Back Social from 5:30-7:00.

Thanks to our PTA and LAEF for making these events possible! Be sure to subscribe to the Almond school calendar to stay up to date on important dates and events. If you haven’t already, please complete your Annual Student Form in PowerSchool as soon as possible.
At Almond, we are committed to providing every student with an exceptional learning experience, a commitment that requires support beyond public funding. LAEF and our PTAs have long shared the work of raising those funds. This year, fundraising responsibility for instructional programs and materials is shifting from PTAs to LAEF.

As you consider your school donations this year, we encourage families to prioritize giving to LAEF to support instructional programs and materials, such as arts curriculum and technology devices. Then please join the Almond PTA and volunteer! Creating an exceptional school experience takes all of us.

LASD Back to School Steps:

Step 1: Donate to LAEF
Step 2: Join and support the PTA for each school your children attend

Almond Back to School Night is next week!
To learn more about your child’s learning this year, please join us at Back To School Night on Thursday, August 20th. Here is the schedule for the evening:
  • 5:30-6:00: Grades 3-6
  • 6:05-6:25: Staff Presentation/PTA/LAEF in the multi
  • 6:30-7:00: Grades TK-2

If you are interested in free childcare during Back-to-School Night, please follow this link: BTSN Childcare.

A big thank-you to Carly and Stefaan Lodge, two Almond parents who run Golden Eagle Summer Sports Camp, for generously providing this service to our families free of charge!

Here’s to a wonderful first week of school!
Raquel

Thank you, families, for supporting your students and teachers this week and this school year by having your child at school before the 8:30 a.m. bell. Arriving on time helps ensure a smooth transition into the classroom each day and allows classes to begin without interruption.

New Volunteer Authorization Process
Beginning this school year, LASD is introducing a new Volunteer Authorization Process that provides one consistent system for all school volunteers. The new process builds on procedures already in place for certain volunteer roles and aligns with updated California law and district policy.

To make the process as simple as possible, volunteers are grouped into three levels based on the type of volunteer work they perform. Most classroom volunteers who are always under the supervision of an LASD staff member will complete a straightforward application and tuberculosis (TB) risk assessment or testing.
Volunteers who may work independently with students or transport students will complete additional requirements appropriate to those roles.

  • An overview of the three volunteer levels
  • Information about whether you are considered a visitor or a volunteer
  • Step-by-step instructions for each volunteer level
  • Links to all required forms and resources

To provide families with plenty of time to complete the new requirements, volunteers will have until December 30, 2026, to complete the authorization process.

LAEF News

LAEF bANNER
Let’s get our students off to a strong start and set them up for success this school year. Your financial support is key!

Providing an exceptional educational experience for our students requires support beyond public funding. LAEF has been helping close this gap for over 44 years by funding teachers, staff, and essential programs across the district.

Starting this year, LAEF is taking on additional responsibility by fundraising for instructional programs and materials previously supported by PTAs. As a result, LAEF’s fundraising goal and per-student ask are increasing to help ensure consistent, reliable support for these programs at every school. We are grateful for your contributions in helping us meet this increased goal.
LAEF
YOU are a vital part of this partnership. Your donations to LAEF help every LASD student receive an excellent, well-rounded education by funding specialized teachers and staff as well as instructional materials and programs across all nine schools. Learn more about the funded programs here.

Here’s how to partner with us:
