Bucket: Each of us has an invisible bucket that symbolizes how we’re feeling. When our buckets are full, we feel good. When they’re empty, we feel bad.



Bucket Filling: Saying or doing something kind that makes someone else (and yourself!) feel good.

Bucket Dipping: Saying or doing something unkind that makes someone else feel badly. This empties that person’s bucket, as well as emptying your own. You can’t fill your bucket by dipping into someone’s bucket and taking their warm fuzzies.



Warm Fuzzies: The nice things we say or do that fill someone’s bucket.



The Five Simon’s Hook Strategies for Dealing with Teasing and Put Downs: Simon’s Hook introduces the idea that when people tease us or put us down they’re fishing for a reaction. Once you take the bait, you’re hooked and no longer a “free fish.” Instead of taking the bait, our kids should swim free by trying these strategies:

1. Do little or nothing (don’t react)
2. Agree with the hook
3. Distract the fisherman (change the subject)
4. Laugh or make a joke
5. Stay away from the hooks (swim in another part of the sea)

Bully: Engages in habitual or repeated cruelty that can be verbal, emotional, physical, or cyber-based and is directed toward one or more targets.



Target: The victim of bully behaviors. These behaviors can be verbal, emotional, physical, or cyber-based.



Bystanders: Witnesses to bullying behavior who do not say or do anything to stop the bullying behavior. By default, these individuals are supporting the bully.



UPstanders: Someone who says or does something to stop the bullying behavior. There are many strategies for being an UPstander and this is the focus of many of our Building Year lessons and discussions. Appropriate strategies change based on the context but always involve either supporting the target or influencing the bully. Sometimes they involve getting the help of a caring adult.
